10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
2 Corrintians 7:10
Paul was writing a second letter to the Corrinthians. The first letter was rather harsh. He told them they were doing things that were not godly and they needed to stop. Naturaly they must have gotten their feelings hurt but in the end they were sorry. Paul used sorrow for what we would call guilt.
Unfortunately many people live with guilt long term. This suffering is not necessary and is opposite the teachings of the Apostles.
The origins of guilt are necessary to bring us to repentance and forgiveness. It is meant to bring us closer to God. But if we stay in guilt this is a new type of sin in that we are not trusting that God can and will forgive us through Jesus Christ. In essence we are relying on our own actions, penance, or a human to cause forgiveness.
So, to be believers in Jesus we must sacrifice our guilt and belive we are forgiven. I love how Paul adds that salvation leaves no regret. Yes, it is true! We can walk this Earth with no regret. That is Good News!
