Making it to Glacier was a long time coming. We had wanted to go in 2019 when we were invited by some friends to accompany them to Nova Scotia. Then in 2020 we had the trip planned when the pandemic happened and all the Parks closed. When they opened in July we tried it a third time when our 40 foot coach had air brake issues. We tried a fourth time in 2020. We flew to Kalispell and could not find a rental car. We even tried to buy a car but they were all charging thousands of dollars over price. Plus at that time East Glacier was closed due to snow that had not melted yet. Even if we went around the Blackfeet tribe had closed their reservation to outsiders. The only way into Glacier from the East is through Black feet land. So we gave up and flew home without ever stepping foot in the park.
This year we were determined to get there. While we were at Buffalo Bill Ranch in Nebraska we discovered that one of the main road to Grinnell Glacier Trail Head in the North Eastern part of Glacier National Park would be closing for road construction on September 20. So we skipped South Dakota and made a direct line to East Glacier. We arrived on day 12 at Two Medicine Lake.
We were also challenged by the weather. Strong wind and a powerful storm was in the forecast for late September 18 and all day September 19th. Since we arrived mid morning on the 17th we decided to do the Southern most area of East Glacier, Two Medicine Lake, and then head north the next day to Grinnell Glacier trail head.
It was super windy. Two Medicine Lake was not only white capping but water was literally blowing off the surface of the lake.
Just Arriving Moose Two Medicine Lake
To say the least we were very excited to see a moose our very first second in Glacier National Park. We decided to tackle three hikes at Two Medicine Lake. They all began at the same trail head. The trail itself is lovely at every turn. The fall colors added to the scenic hike.
cool bridge near Aster Falls Love the falls colors! Aster Falls trail
Aster Falls
Can you tell I was just a little excited finally be at Glacier! This was the third straight year that we had tried to make it to these mountains. I couldn’t believe we were finally there!
From Aster Falls we took the next spur trail up to Aster Park Overlook to get a good panoramic look around the Two Medicine Lake area.
It’s this way! Not used to this altitude. Almost to the top!
After the amazing view at the top of the outlook we decided to go further down the lake trail. We make it to a creek. We decided that we did not want to get wet so we had lunch and turned back. On the way back we took a different trail closer to the lake and we saw another Moose!
Nice Spot for Lunch Two Medicine Lake
Our first day in Glacier and we had already seen two moose, a waterfall, peaked a mountain and made some new friends. Wow what a day! Can’t wait until tomorrow we climb to the famous Grinnell Glacier!
