7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. 9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:7-10
In this time of crisis in America and the world we all must reflect on what got us here. We may not be able to go back in time and prevent the hatred, abuse and injustice that has brought on the social unrest. But we can break the chain.
Living in beautiful San Diego for 23 years I walked down Martin Luther King Promenade every day to and from our shop, CrunchTime Popcorn and Kim’s Ice Cream next to Petco Park in the Gaslamp District. In the center of the Promenade is an amazing sculpture called “Breaking the Chains”. One day as I walked quickly down MLK Promenade to our shop a couple of tourist ladies stopped me seeing that I was a local. One of the ladies asked me “What did Martin Luther King have to do with San Diego?” I replied that Martin Luther King has to do with all of us. I urged them to read the many plaques along the pathway that had quotes from him. My favorite is “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
What kind of future do you personally want torment, anger, sadness and hate or peace, joy, happiness and love? We have freedom of choice, free will. I hope you choose the path Jesus laid out for us: the path of happiness, peace, love and freedom. Break the chain today and spread some love even if the other is hateful. If you are a believer in Jesus listen to the Spirit inside you. You will be able to love and abandon hate and so will those around you. It just takes one person to start a new chain of love. Some may think they will lose their friends but instead expect to reap a harvest of blessings.
